People who identify themselves as transgender and “gender non-conforming people” encounter widespread discrimination, and a very high number have attempted suicide, according to a study done by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. The survey counted the answers from 6,450 participants and is the most comprehensive survey ever done regarding discrimination of transgender people.
The study also found that 41% of participants reported attempting suicide, compared to 1.6 percent of the general population. They were nearly four times more likely to live in extreme poverty, with household income below $10,000. Over 50% reported experiencing harassment or other mistreatment in the workplace, and 26% said they’d lost a job due to being transgender or gender non-conforming.
